Rocks, Rocks, Desert, Rocks

I had the opportunity to spend some poetry time in the desert with a friend. The following definition of desert is by I find this interesting because the southern California desert was ocean many eons ago. 3.”an area of the ocean in which it is believed no marine life exists.” Now new life exists in this place of little water.

Past a certain point of the drive where there had been great winds, rocks appear and the wind is slower. Many rocks are grouped together like tribes. Worn by wind, thunderous rains, and cracked by the sun, these rocks have their own stories. Some carry prehistoric cave paintings. Others hide fossils from that long ago sea.

I created a fiber art piece called, “Desert Tides,” that pulls the idea of time passing and the land changing all into one.

There’s a lot of hidden life in the desert and some not so hidden as I hear stories of rattlesnakes. We read poetry back and forth surrounded by desert sand.

Being in the desert and driving to and from gave me time to be in quiet and in open space not full of buildings. I find that my spirit sometimes needs to have these open, quiet spaces to refresh and refuel.

being the void

drain pipe echoes

the swell of waves

arid sand you keep

asking me questions

I am not the inner circle

Apache tribes wander

New Mexico

you do not know

where you come from

have I heard the creation

myth about monsters

(Poem by Cindy Rinne from “spider with wings” by Jamii Publishing)

Be sure to drink plenty of water and to listen to the secrets the desert wants to share with you.
