Poetry Reading in a Unique Space

Charlotte Cousins opened Buddhamouse Emporium in Claremont, CA as a fulfillment of a dream. From the beginning, she connected with the community beyond having a wonderful retail store. Meditation, henna, writing groups, and book launches. Charlotte also exhibits local artists monthly. I had a solo show here last year called, “Mapless.”

On May 23, 2015, Charlotte opened the store for a reading of my first poetry book, “Speaking Through Sediment,” co-authored with Michael Cooper. Charlotte moved store displays and sets up chairs for the event. This time I was greeted with her newly completed window sign by Cynthia Cummings and their warm smiles.

The store promoted the event and I did a Facebook event. I used a photograph from my walk in the foothills as a backdrop for the invitation. Before the event, I added the poets’ biographies and a picture of the book cover.

While the release of our book was the focus, it was a delight to have guest poets, Carla McGill, KL Straight, and Bory Thach read their poetry or memoir. I felt their poetry fit beautifully in this space and expanded Michael’s and mine poetry. Their writings tapped into their life experiences.

Michael and I were appreciative of all those who attended. The store was filled to standing-room only. It was great to have the support of our writer friends, family, and new friends. I got to meet a Facebook friend and to have great discussions.

Michael and I took turns reading our poems. It’s fun to have this conversation between us of family, myth, and life stories. Our styles are quite different. We ended our reading by reading one poem together, overlapping our voices like a sung conversation.
