Old Broads Art Exhibit

My friend, Karen Karlsson, curated a show called, “Old Broads,” held in Chinatown, LA at the redpipe Gallery. I was thrilled to be invited to exhibit with a great group of women. The art ranged from installation, drawing, painting, fiber art, encaustic, photography, sculpture, and more.

The title of the show caused much discussion from not wanting to be known as “old” or a “broad.” Karen writes: “In a city whose dominant industry is peddling our youth-obsessed, airbrushed culture to the rest of the word, what is a woman of a certain age to do? Old Broads features the work of twenty-two female, visual artists over the age of 50, currently working in the Los Angeles area. The show seeks to showcase and celebrate artists who bring a lifetime of experience and experiences to their work.”

I completed three new fiber art pieces from the words of poems I had written about a goddess, an antlered dog, and a mirrored tree based in Iceland. These were hung above my new collaborative book with Michael Cooper of poems. It was fun to share art, texture, pattern, color, and the sound of poetry.

Hundreds of people attended the opening reception. I saw many friends and made new ones. It was fun to talk about my new art. To hang next to Leslie A. Brown who did the cover art for the book. This night was the first time she saw the book.
