Symphonic Poems

symphonic_poems

My daughter and I attended a concert by the Redlands Symphony of works by Jean Sibelius and Edvard Grieg. Sebelius is famous for “Finlandia.” This composition was inspired by the poem “The Melting of the Ice on the Ulea River” by the Finnish author, Zachria Topelius. This poem talks about freedom in deciding ones own course. Symphony No. 2 in D major, op.43 also by Sibelius was inspired by the Kalevala, the Finnnish national epic. I have used a quote from the Kalevala in my poetry when I wrote about birch trees. This music felt contemporary in its tone and rhythms. Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor, op. 16 brought a thunderous piano solo surrounded by kettle drums and the symphony. I love the idea of symphonic poems giving a voice to words through percussion, strings, woodwinds, and brass. My spirit felt expanded in the breadth of Scandinavian winter. I think it is good to experience various forms of art besides your own.

For example: The next day, instead of fiber art, I went to see a ceramics show. I attended the 70th Anniversary of the Scripps Ceramic Annual at the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery, Claremont, CA. This exhibit was of the curators’ from year’s past work. Many of these curators are movers and shakers of the ceramic and the art world in general. One thing I took away from this show was an idea for a collaborative piece. Inspiration comes from all different places.
