COURAGE

I heard my friend, shali Nicholas, read her poetry as part of the MFA program at Cal State University San Bernardino. “We would be a good match for a poetry reading,” I thought. I got my courage up and asked shali if she would like to read with me. “Yes,” she said.

Several friends had great art shows at a newer store called the Buddhamouse Emporium in Claremont, CA. I proposed a show combining my art work on the walls and a poetry reading with Nikia Chaney which will happen in May 2014. This conversation lead to Charlotte Cousins, owner, sharing her vision to have literary events almost weekly.

Time to plot! I asked shali if she’d like to read here. An affirmative with a date, allowed me to approach Charlotte with a two-person reading called, RUNES OF TIME – Language, Ancient, Present. We were a “go” for Friday, May 31, 2013. We were also thrilled to be reading in front of the “Namaste” art series by Nancy Macko.

I drove up the windy mountain road through some fog. I had to stop and take a picture of a carpet of clouds over the valley. After arriving at shali’s, we sat under giant pine trees, wisps of clouds in blue sky, and began to look at our poems. My idea was to interweave our poems. Instead of the usual one person reads, then the other person reads, we were going to take turns reading. A collaborative form. We were pleased to find enough key words to link our different writing styles while retaining our individual voices. Family, myth, and observations of daily life were a thread running through our poems. We were excited.

The day came. We read our poems using a script for who would read what. Sometimes we each read a poem and other times we each read a block of 4-5 poems. Our poetry has many serious themes. But from the photographs taken, we laughed a lot too. It was a joyful evening and we were grateful to all who came. Our hope is to present this program again in another location.
