A CONSTELLATION OF GALAXIES
I finally got to show my new series, “A Constellation of Galaxies” in a solo show in Redlands, CA. I began this series with the idea of using upholstery fabrics so I could work larger. These pieces are raw edged. There’s no batting or backing like quilts would have.
The designs began as geometric shapes. Then they were folded and manipulated to create abstract textures. These folds were like the movement of rivers, how rocks change, and the drifting of clouds.
The concept for this series started when I saw a piece about the Wayfinders. They navigated by observing the ocean waves, the stars, and sensing beyond sight. Several of my artworks have all or parts of constellations. Other repeated imagery included roots and spirals. Both were indicators of time. This also meant the series ranged from beneath the earth to the stars.
These mixed-media artworks also might have photographs, watercolor paintings, and acrylic paintings.
After creating several pieces of this series, I submitted them to galleries. They were not accepted some places. Then I was invited to exhibit at Wave Lengths Salon and Gallery. I told them I had a new series. I made a presentation and they agreed to show this new work. I had enough to fill the large front room, but needed more work for the smaller back room in time for the show.
I told them I was going to do a drawing-a-day for a month before the show would open. During that month the story and artwork of the ghost fish was birthed.
The ghost fish series included: fiber pieces, ink drawings, and jewelry.
This show will be shown from September 18- November 18, 2012.
Awesome Cindy! I’ve always loved your artwork
lovely work!
