as above, so below

What a delight for PoetrIE, a group that gathers for weekly critiques and hosts readings, to present their poems as part of Penny McElroy’s Art Reception. PoetrIE wrote Ekphrasic Poems with Penny’s amazing artworks were our inspiration. The reception for her solo show, as above, so below, was held at Wave Lengths Salon & Gallery in Redlands, CA.

Pictured above from l-r: Larry Eby, Jason Keller, Cindy Rinne, Ryan Mattern, Andre Katkov, and artist Penny McElroy. Danielle Donaldson missed our group picture and is pictured below. Each reader had five minutes. Most selected three artworks to write about. It was interesting to hear the reasons why they choose each piece. It could be an image, text, or colors that sparked the poem. Penny’s work has many layers to it and several surprises causing you to look deeper.

I found the experience of writing from a specific image limiting at first. Then it became expansive, allowing the images to take me to new places. The poems were gifts for Penny. She and people in attendance experienced her artwork in new ways after the reading. It was fun to see people going up close to find the treasures we wrote about. Many thanks to Maureen and Laura as owners of Wave Lengths for supporting the arts. The reception ended with a rare “ring solar exlipse.” As the PoetrIE host, I said that I knew how to throw quite the party!
