I see art as healing. I decided to try a book called, “The Soul’s Palette – Drawing on Art’s Transformative Powers for Health and Well-Being” by Cathy A. Malchiodi to dig deeper into this aspect of art. The book has several creative exercises. I decided that I would actually do the exercises instead of just reading them. This has meant taking a long time to get through this book, but actually doing the exercises has been worth it.

The collages shown above are about your inner critic and how to use it for good. This was a breakthrough exercise in that I tried to simplify the composition. I also used text as a blended element or shape as design. Can you hear the birds squawking?

Because of this book, I played with watercolors for the first time in several years. I started my art career as a watercolorist. It felt good to mix and blend the colors using the paper as light.

This is the beginning of my “Image Journal.” I began cutting scraps of fabric and gluing them on a page. I started to play with markmaking. The dots look like pathways and the curvy lines are the journey. I decided to make a Key to my visual map. It was fun and freeing. Right now my life journey is going in many new directions! I don’t have to produce finished artworks here. Maybe that’s why more revelation and healing come in simply doing exercises.

  1. Thanks for sharing this, Cindy. Amazing healing powers in simple creative exercises aren’t there?

    • Yes, Linda, it’s amazing what can be created using crayons, markers, glue stick and magazines!
