I made this 10×8″ art work for an invitational group summer show at the Bunny Gunner Gallery in Pomona, CA called, “WE ALL SCREAM.” The topic of ice cream lead me to thinking about the cherry on top of a sundae. I knew I had some vintage 1950s fabrics with cherries.

I found other summery fabrics and started cutting and machine piecing. I kept piecing and cutting at different random angles. I saw that I had a skirt shape. The idea came to make a doll dress. I made a pattern and cut out the dress shape. I added some lace at the bottom. My friend had a doll hanger I could use. I spray painted the hanger bright pink. I made the back of the dress out of more cherry fabric. I hemmed the dress by machine and stitched the neckline as a raw edge. The sleeves are hemmed by hand and the vintage daisy trim is also hand stitched onto the sleeves.

I wrote a poem about how I used to make dolls by hand and about other childhood memories. Using a marker on Japanese fabric, I made an apron. A few drips of paint, stamping and drawing complete the apron. Vintage rick-rack trim was added to the bottom of the apron and was used as the apron strings. This was fun to make especially since I used to make dolls and doll clothes when I was a child.

A themed show can sometimes push me to try new things! The opening for this show is the 2nd Sat. Artwalk, July 10, 6-11pm, 226 W. Second St., Pomona.
