Creativity in Santa Monica

Recently I taught my “Anything Goes” workshop for the Santa Monica Quilt Guild. The students took the title of the workshop to heart and experimented. They captured well the idea of freedom when creating art quilts. The photos are close-ups of the workshop results and of two students. I always enjoy the variety of styles and colors created by students who are participating in the same class. Some of the pieces were of unusual shapes. A couple of the pieces have poetry inspired by my poetry readings.

A special treat were mother and daughter students from Japan. The mother spoke no English and the daughter spoke just enough to get throught the class. Since I demonstrate each step of the process, they could follow visually what the class was about. At the end of the day, I was given a thank you gift by the mother!

Here are some of the other pieces created. This class involves making four elements that can be arranged in any order. The class sample is 11×14″, but some people worked larger. Some created wall pieces, a vest and a table cover. There was even a birthday gift for a husband! Inspiration came from subject matter, swimsuit colors, photograph or a favorite fabric.

As the winds blew through the classroom, so did the joy of taking a risk to try something new. A fun day with wonderful quilt artists!
