I am happy to be participating in a collaborative art installation with the Global Alchemy Forum. This installation is a part of the 2010 Joshua Tree Music Festival. The art works will be hung by clips on a web between two trees. “The audience at the Joshua Tree Music Festival will walk through the web and experience the thoughts and feelings of fellow human beings from all parts of the globe.”

The concept of the art hanging in the air caused me to think about both sides. Sometimes I repeated the poem on the back and drew some symbols from the front. Other times the backing fabric spoke for itself. I enjoyed working with various media. Usually I create art quilts. For this project I tried some mixed media. “Urban Nature” are my photographs stitched together. I had fun with the symbols of spirals and circles in this piece. My original poem on the back reads:

URBAN NATURE/ Discovery is just / beyond my grasp/ in the circles.

WATCHFULNESS / In my darkness of contemplative/ Solitude I sense a new/ Beginning folding back my/ Sight. I walk across the/ Room and open the door.

I combined magazine photographs and textiles to make a collage to express my original poem, “Watchfulness.”

The back of “Refuge of Change” is from my vintage Indonesian fabrics. The front is a mix of ethnic fabrics and hand-dyed fabrics by Joan Dyer. I left the bottom of the strips to be a type of fringe as the wind always blows in the desert. The poem is written with permanent marker. My original poem:

REFUGE OF CHANGE / Yellow tree calling my/ name lie a cage with/ an open door. I hear/ the leaves falling/ like footsteps behind/ me. A church bell/ chimes, birds sing and/ cars travel. This is/ a refuge of change./ Bare branches to come after golden lights/ and whispering winds.
