Heaven and Earth

I participated in the “Poets on Site Pacific Asia Museum Installation of the Audio Tour” on Saturday, August 22nd, 2009. The event included singers, musicians, dancers and poets.

This is an innovative tour sponsored by the Museum. Kath Abela Wilson along with Amelia Chapman and Tai-Ling Wong coordinated this effort. Members of Poets on Site wrote poems in response to artwork in the Museum collection. I found it an amazing experience to focus in on one piece of artwork and write a poem about it. Then the Museum made a professional recording of me reading my poem.

You can listen to the poetry as you walk through the Museum by a free cell phone tour or you can find the sound files and transcripts at http://www.pacificasiamuseum.org. To listen to my reading of “Heaven and Earth” call (626) 628-9690, 22#.

My poem is written about a Qing Dynasty Nephrite with gilding bowl. This poem is dedicated to my dear friend Sandy.

Two friends walk in silent understanding
amidst the endless snow.
Distant village, trees, mountains
and soaring rocks know
soon one will leave the exterior landscape.
Drifing to a dwelling place inside
the floral heaven.
External translucents gilded in gold.
She tends the luminant garden.
The other longingly holds the bowl
separated by a membrane
and remembers.
